Nick and Shelby’s outdoor wedding in Centerville, Ohio featured a rustic theme and a lavender and grey color palette.
The bride and groom chose Benham’s Grove, a 19th century farmhouse in their hometown, as the venue for the wedding. “With Nick being in the Air Force, it was very important to us to get married in a place that had a special meaning,” Shelby shared. “We knew with the military we would be moving around a lot, so our vision of marrying in our hometown was crucial.”
The couple made their wedding one-of-a-kind with unique DIY decorations and flowers. “The bridesmaids and I actually built the centerpieces, corsages, and bouquets ourselves,” the bride explained. “I wanted my bouquet to stand out with bright colors and fell in love with all the flowers.”
In addition to a chocolate peanut butter cake made by the groom’s sister, a student at the Culinary Institute of America, Nick and Shelby sweetened their reception with an ice cream bar. “Nick and I are not cake people, so we had an ice cream bar donated by Cold Stone Creamery. Nick’s family friend owns the company and offered to supply all the ice cream and toppings for our wedding.”
How did you meet your spouse?
Our story began one Friday night in 2010. We were set up by a mutual friend after a high school football game. We survived the awkward blind date and started dating a few months later! Attending two different universities put our relationship to the test, but “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” On May 27th, 2015, we got engaged at the exact location where we said, “I do” one year later.
What was your favorite part of your big day?
My favorite moment from our wedding was walking down the aisle. I remember turning the corner and seeing Nick crying. His emotions had the entire venue in tears and I could really feel the love from him and everyone around us.
What’s your advice to other military brides?
I would tell other military brides to embrace the change and unknown. We were not sure if Nick was going to be able to be at our wedding until a month before. We booked our honeymoon a week before the wedding! I have learned that it doesn’t matter where you are or where you’re going as long as you have each other. And as much as you are missing him, he is missing you the same!!
